The epicentre of the Mekong Delta, Can Tho is the largest city in the region and feels like a metropolis after a few days exploring the backwaters. As the political, economic, cultural and transportation centre of the Mekong Delta, it’s a buzzing town with a lively waterfront lined with sculpted gardens, an appealing blend of narrow backstreets and wide boulevards. The French sought to exploit the riches of Indochina and river commerce here became integral in connecting the Mekong Delta, Laos and Cambodia. Thanks to its tremendously fertile soil, Can Tho is one of the largest agricultural producers in the Mekong Delta, often referred to as Vietnam’s rice basket.

Cần Thơ Museum is the largest museum in the Mekong Delta, with a total surface area of 2,700 square meters. The Museum exhibits, presents Can Tho historical relics about cultures and inhabitants in Can Tho through historical periods, through economical-social and cultural achievements of three main ethnic minorities: Kinh (Viet), Hoa (Chinese Vietnamese) and Khmer during the process of nation building and national defence and development, which has resulted in today’s beautiful Tay Do land.

Walk around Ninh Kieu Pier

Address: 68 Hai Ba Trung, Tan An Ward, Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho

According to several researchers, Ninh Kieu pier has existed from the empire of Gia Long in Nguyen Dynasty. It is now known to be built in a relatively large-scale investment to become a tourist park with an area of over 7,000 sq. meters. In the park, in addition to precious manicured plants, there is a green grass creeping under cement ground. At night, the lighting system of the park makes this place more eye-catching.

Binh Thuy Ancient House

Binh Thuy ancient house Can Tho has long been renowned for its ancient beauty along with its unique architecture. Antiques and prominent traditional cultural features have been still deliberately preserved and promoted by descendants of the founder. Although modeled as design of French architecture, this ancient house is decorated in typical Southern architectural style.

Cacao Farm

At Lam The Cuong’s family farm, visitors can learn how fruit from a cacao tree becomes a bar of rich, dark chocolate. Immigrated from Fukkien 200 years ago, Lam The Cuong's father brought back cacao seeds from Malaysia and with the help of a book written in French, learned how to cultivate cacao. The tradition continues on the one hectare organic farm, with 2,000 trees producing four tons of cacao a year. Upon arrival at the farm, Lam The Cuong will lead visitors on a tour of his modest farm and explain the process.

Can Tho Grand Prison

Can Tho Grand prison is an important historical site to visit in the city. It was initially built by the French during the colonial era, but then used by the South Vietnamese and Americans during the Vietnam War. The prison has 21 detention rooms, a church, pagoda, a house for the supervisor, and a kitchen. The mannequins depict certain scenes of what it was like in the prison when it was used, and they are quite eerie.

Can Tho Bridge

Can Tho Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge with the South East Asia's longest main span, which was built by Official Development Aid (ODA) of Japanese Government and the reciprocal capital of Vietnamese Government. As one of the longest bridges in Can Tho, Can Tho Bridge significant contributes in promoting the development of economy, society as well as Can Tho tourism. Not only connecting the riverbanks of Hau River, Can Tho Bridge also plays an important role in the exchange among regions in Mekong River Delta contributing to bring the region's position to be worth its potential and strengths.

Ong Pagoda

Ong Pagoda, also known as Quang Trieu (Guang Zhao) Assembly Hall, was formerly the assembly hall of the Chinese group from Guangzhou and Zhaoqing (Guangdong, China) under the migration flows in the 17 - 18 century. Ong Pagoda is remarkable thanks to unique architecture, vivid colors decorated with porcelain human figures reproducing Chinese classics and legends on the roof and both sides of three-gate entrance. The entire pagoda architecture is built in the shape of "Quoc" (national) in kanji with the closed blocks perpendicular each other.

Truc Lam Phuong Nam Zen Monastery

Address: My Khanh, Phong Dien Town, Can Tho

Built on an area of four hectares and featuring a hall with a capacity of 500 people, the Phuong Nam Monastery, with Venerable Thich Binh Tam appointed as its abbot, is the largest Buddhist temple in the Mekong Delta region. Phuong Nam is one of many monasteries of the Truc Lam Zen School, which was founded by 13th century King Tran Nhan Tong and recently revived by Most Venerable Thich Thanh Tu.

Munirangsyaram Pagoda

Address: 36 Hoa Binh, Tay An Ward, Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho

Dating back to the mid-1940s, the Munirangsyaram Pagoda (or Munirensay) is a little gem in the centre of the city and was built for the local Khmer community. This Khmer Theravada Buddhist pagoda has some fantastic ornamentation and a noticeable lack of Taoist spirit decorations, which are so commonplace in pagodas of the Vietnamese Mahayana style. The two-storey structure has an upstairs sanctuary that comes with an almost life-size Buddha image. Even though it has little in the way of architectural interest, its lines have an unquestionable elegance.

Nam Do very famous among the locals, so you can expect authentic, Vietnamese fare that isn’t tailored to international tastes. In addition to Mekong specialties, the restaurant also focuses on Chinese food. The restaurant is large, looks a little colonial, and is situated almost at the waterfront.

Mekong 1965

Mekong 1965 is a family-run establishment serving delicious home-cooked southern Vietnamese specialties. This little restaurant is about as authentic as they come and while not at all fancy, it is definitely one of the best restaurants in Can Tho. It has been running since 1965, with recipes handed down through the generations so expect some truly local fare being served. Riverside seating is also available.

Bun Rieu Cua 110

Try Can Tho speciality bun rieu cua, a tomato-based crab noodle soup with rice vermicelli and a dumpling/cake made of paddy crab and shrimp paste. The broth is rich with umami flavour, slightly sweet and sour, and is served with a medley of raw herbs and veg like sprouts that add interesting textures. It’s also usually served with pork meat and cubes of pork blood.

Helios' Cocktail
